How to bind a tie

The tie should be tied so that the wider end ends slightly above the belt and the narrow end is about 2 cm shorter than the wider end. That would be optimal. With a very tall man, this will not always work because the tie is simply too short. In any case, the wide, front end of the tie should settle about above the waistband. The back, thin end, on the other hand, can be quite a bit higher up.

The simple tie knot, or four-in-hand knot, goes especially well with sporty, casual clothing. It is easy to tie and therefore also suitable for beginners.

Put your tie around your neck so that the wider end is on the right. It should hang down longer than the narrower end, just below the crotch. Grasp the wide end with your right hand and place it to the left over the narrower end that you are holding with your left hand. Then bring the wider end around under the narrower end so that it comes to rest on the right. Now slide the wide end to the left over the half knot you are holding with your thumb and forefinger. Now bring the wide end around the narrow end from underneath with your left hand and pull it through to the front.

Then just guide the wide end between the outer and the underlying layer of the knot with your right hand and push it through. Hold the narrow end of the tie and slowly tighten the knot. If necessary, loosen again a little to correct the shape.

For our leather ties, we recommend only the four-in-hand knot because it is less bulky. Leather is less elastic and malleable than silk. If you use it to tie a Windsor knot, for example, there won’t be enough left of the tie to make it look nice afterwards.
