Leather, Shoe and Boot care

Shoe and boot care

Shoe and boot care involves regular cleaning and careful handling. It is best to always put on boots using a shoe horn or boot hook. Special boot shapers help to keep boots in shape and extend their lifespan. After taking them off, insert the boot trees while the boots are still warm.

Moisture builds up in shoes during the day when they are worn. To dry properly, they need a day’s rest. Therefore, you should not wear the same boots every day. Never dry wet shoes on the radiator, as this will dehydrate the leather and make it brittle. It is best to stuff them with newspaper and leave them to dry at room temperature.

Before cleaning your boots, remove any dirt and dust. Use a damp cloth wrapped tightly around your index and middle fingers, or a brush.

Then apply a high-quality shoe polish evenly all over until the boots have a completely matte finish. Use a small brush or cotton cloth for this. Wait a few hours for the wax in the polish to harden thoroughly before polishing. Use a horsehair brush to polish the boots with quick, even movements, applying only light pressure. The more carefully and frequently you rub, the shinier the boots will be.

Please do not use expensive instant shine sponges. Their ingredients can damage leather. For a quick shine, rub the boots with the inside of a banana peel and then polish them with a cotton cloth or a horsehair brush.

Leather Care

The smooth leather that we use for most of our products is highly durable. It is supple, retains its shape, and is tough. In fact, it’s almost alive, as it breathes, expands and absorbs and releases moisture.

It deserves to be cared for from time to time. For normal use, simply apply a thin layer of leather grease twice a year. After a few hours, polish gently with a very soft cloth. That’s all there is to it!

You can also use silicone oil, but sparingly! However, the leather will shine slightly after treatment.

Impregnating spray provides additional water and dirt repellency. Spray evenly, leave to dry, then polish with a soft cloth.

If you’ve damaged your leather, you can wash it with lukewarm water and shampoo. Dry it by hanging it loosely in a well-ventilated area, away from heaters, and then reapply the grease. Never hang wet, dirty items in the cupboard if you want to avoid the metal parts rusting!

Treat dirt splashes as you would on your skin: with warm water and mild soap. Do not rub too hard! When treating stains, use a fine sponge and dab rather than rub. Remove fresh stains immediately with an absorbent cloth.

If the stain is stubborn, never use products containing solvents such as turpentine, stain remover or petrol. Treat protein stains with slightly warm water only. If this does not work, try cold soda water. Beaten egg white is said to be effective against grease stains. If you spill alcohol, you can carefully use spirits to help remove the stain.
